Challenge

Headquartered in New York City, Stone Source is “a design-driven company that provides natural stone, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile, engineered stone and reclaimed wood”.

Stone Source contacted The Mezzanine Company regarding an expansion project, looking for a way to boost its warehouse’s overall space. Their warehouse had a lot of height, and they wanted to fully maximize the space of their location, where they would be storing a large amount of material samples to send to potential clients.

Stone Source wanted a turnkey solution for their expansion and asked The Mezzanine Company to act as the GC for the entire project for them. It would require sprinkler and electric work in addition to our mezzanine services.

Solution

Working with some fellow experienced industry professionals, The Mezzanine Company agreed to handle the GC duties for the entire project. We arranged for technicians from all of the involved companies to make site visits to determine the scope of the work required.

Based on the information gathered from these visits we were able to present Stone Source with a proposal for the complete project. We provided designs for a 3,750 square foot mezzanine, sprinkler system, and lighting underneath the mezzanine (and additional lighting rework above). The mezzanine was designed to have an 18’ clear height to ensure that Stone Source would be able to fit shelving or other storage solutions underneath comfortably.

Additionally, we provided two IBC regulation straight stairs for access to the platform. The stairs would have landings in the middle, due to the height, to meet regulation. We also utilized two 5’ wide overhead safety gates to help facilitate the movement of larger materials to and from the platform. Lastly, we used 3/4” ResinDek for the flooring.

Based on their location, Stone Source’s warehouse fell under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. Based on the project timing, Stone Source was considering hiring an expeditor to take ownership of the permitting process. Instead, we offered our services and expertise and were able to fill this role as well, including helping them get a variance to avoid having to install an expensive handicap lift which was not needed for their application.

During the entire process, we worked closely with Stone Source, our electrician and plumber, and the mezzanine installation team, to coordinate a smooth installation. Our emphasis on teamwork and communication and our turnkey project management allowed Stone Source to focus on their core business needs while we guided the expansion project to a successful completion together.
