Challenge

Multihousing Depot began as a family owned business founded in 1894 where they began transforming their customers’ homes into comfortable living environments. Their business was growing rapidly in appliance sales (countertops, cabinets, etc.) and window and door services. This continuous growth led Multihousing Depot to embark upon a major expansion project for their upcoming move from their old building in Pennsauken, NJ to their recently purchased building in Burlington, NJ.

After purchasing new machinery from Germany, Multihousing Depot contacted The Mezzanine Company regarding their expansion project looking to increase the storage space in their new 100,000 square foot building. Multihousing Depot asked The Mezzanine Company to oversee their entire platform project which included fire protection (sprinklers), electrical (including egress lighting) and permitting work.

They were also interested in a quick turnaround time. The timeframe of the project was essential, throughout the process, as the customer had to move out of his current building by a certain date or face significant fines/penalties.

Solution

With past professional experience, The Mezzanine Company agreed to oversee the entire scope of work and coordinate permitting and installation with each involved subcontractor. After conducting site visitations and reviewing, The Mezzanine Company provided Multihousing with a proposal suitable to their needs.

After gathering the information required and working closely with Multihousing Depot’s Operations Manager, we provided a design for a 5,200 square foot platform. The space proposed underneath the platform was to be used for small parts and as a work area with more frequently needed items. Above the platform, they were looking to pick small parts, and bulk storage items, including some stock, sized cabinets.

We provided two OSHA staircases for access to the platform; each consisted of one mid landing and one top landing. Its entire perimeter was enclosed with handrail and kickplate. Two 6’ wide double swing gates were also included in the design. The flooring consisted of ½” Resindek with a gray diamond seal finish, a more durable alternative to standard decking.

We hit a homerun with a great township when we received approval on the new mezzanine quickly and were able to release it to production immediately.

When the mezzanine was installed, our installation crew was on hand to unload and begin the installation. The mezzanine was installed in 6 days. On the 6th day, our electrician and fire protection team stepped in to complete their portion while our installation crew was finishing up. The electrical and fire protection work were completed on the same day. As soon as our teams finished up, the inspector from The Township of Burlington went on site to inspect the structure the next day and approved it right away!

During the entire process, The Mezzanine Company worked closely with Burlington Township and the subcontractors to assure accuracy on completing the project. We maintained constant communication with Multihousing Depot along every step of the way to ensure completion of the structure was accomplished in the timeframe requested. Our attention to detail and timing allowed us to project manage from start to finish successfully.
