Case Study

NAVSEA, West Bethesda, MD

Challenge

NAVSEA or Naval Sea Systems Command is the branch of the US Navy responsible for the engineering, building, purchasing and maintaining of ships, submarines and combat systems.  They are the largest of the Navy’s five system commands with over 60,000 civilian and military personnel. NAVSEA contacted The Mezzanine Company about an expansion for their base in Maryland. They had a few issues they needed to be resolved:

They were installing new equipment that was too tall to operate from the floor

Secondly, the new equipment would be occupying valuable floor space that was currently being used for storage

Lastly, they needed a solution implemented as quickly as possible as the equipment required to be up and running soon

Solution

First, to solve the issue with the height of the equipment we designed a two-part work platform with one height of 3’-2” and the other of 5’.  The platform had three short OSHA staircases to go up to and connect the two sections of the work platform giving them an approximate work area of 332 square feet.  We also lined up two 5’ sliding gates with the stairs to allow for the smooth transferring of larger materials on to either level of the work platform.

To help with the loss of storage space, we developed a nearly 15’ tall mezzanine that would go above the equipment. It gave them back approximately 1,000 square feet of storage space they had lost from installing the machines there. The mezzanine included a ladder with a security cage because it took less room then stairs and allowed us to maximize the available space. Lastly, the mezzanine came with a mezzanine gate to allow for the easy transfer of items via a lift.

We worked very closely with NAVSEA, the freight company, and our installers to make certain that we could hit the deadline necessary for the project’s completion.  We even arranged for the installation work to start on Saturday and work the rest of the weekend into the beginning of the week to ensure that the whole project was completed on time.

What Our Customers Say...

The staff at The Mezzanine Company seemed to be an unusually well coordinated, enthusiastic team. Everyone I interacted with had current information and knew exactly what needed to be done to keep the project moving towards completion. Your consistent, timely communication and keeping me aware of the project status made it easy to make decisions throughout the process.
