Retro Fitness’ owners, Jontue Long and David Garrard (former quarterback for Jacksonville Jaguars) contacted The Mezzanine Company to assist in the construction of their latest fitness center in Jacksonville, Florida. The new facility was designed with a state of the art cardio deck with a movie theater and a Retro Blends juice bar. The engineered mezzanine was the best way to maximize the use of the space.

Similar to previous Retro Fitness locations, it was essential to accommodate ground floor layout plans for the many features included in the facility and to match them with the building dimensions accurately.

In addition to accommodating the ground floor layout, there was also a minor challenge to have the cardio deck conform to the existing curved window panes at the front of the building.

Working closing with the owners and architect for the project, The Mezzanine Company provided a design for an approximately 2,000 square foot custom mezzanine. The mezzanine would include two IBC stairs and wire mesh handrail. After the initial design was approved, our project manager made a site visit and confirmed all the measurements and made final adjustments to the design.

After production was completed, the mezzanine was delivered, and the installation began. During the installation process, it was discovered that the recessed footings for the platform columns were not level and which required quick action to solve. The Mezzanine Company’s team of skilled managers, along with our experienced contractor, who is head quartered in Jacksonville, were able to make adjustments to the columns affected by the uneven footings. The adjustments were made quickly and inexpensively and, working together with the GC, the install schedule was kept on track.

Upon completion of the installation, the owners were told by the local officials that they were required to have a handicap lift installed before opening! This required quick action and modifications to the newly installed structure. Our President and owner, Mr. Christopher Tomasello, traveled to Jacksonville on short notice to assist in expediting further modifications to the mezzanine!

After months of planning and effective communication between the trades, the final product was a huge success. The new cardio deck addition enhanced Retro Fitness’ workout experience by creating valuable additional space for exercise equipment in a user-friendly environment that appealed to Retro Fitness’ customers.
