Founded in 2004, Retro Fitness is a leading national fitness franchise with more than 120 gyms open or in development across the country. Retro Fitness provides investors and franchisees with a full suite of world-class support services to deliver a simple turnkey and operational health and fitness club.

Recently, we were contacted by a new Retro Fitness owner to assist with providing a mezzanine / cardiodeck for the latest Retro Fitness in the Florida area. The Mezzanine Company had previously worked on mezzanines for over a dozen Retro Fitness locations.

In order to provide all the amenities their customers have come to expect, Retro Fitness would need to maximize the space at their new location. They decided the best way to do this was to include a large cardio deck in their plans for their new facility.

Some special consideration of this project would be:

• Integrating the mezzanine with the existing architecture plans in order to minimize the mezzanine profile and hide the columns in what was being designed below the mezzanine
• Designing the mezzanine for movement caused by exercise equipment
• Coordination with other trades, i.e. integration of an ADA lift installation and providing a footings plan

Based on our previous experience on other Retro Fitness projects and coordination with the architect, The Mezzanine Company provided a proposal for an approximate 3,000 square foot custom mezzanine / cardiodeck. 

The mezzanine would include 1 straight IBC staircase and wire mesh handrail. Working closely with the architect, we were able to help seamlessly integrate the columns into the floorplan below. The mezzanine was also custom designed to handle the deflection from the exercise machines. Additionally, we provided PE stamped drawings, for the State of Florida, to be used for permitting purposes.

Once the proposal was approved and drawings were ready, our project managers visited the new location to review the drawings and make final adjustments.

After careful planning between all parties, the mezzanine was delivered and installed at the new location. The installation timing was planned around the rest of the construction, so as to keep the project on schedule. The new cardio deck enhanced Retro Fitness’ workout experience by creating valuable additional space for their new exercise equipment
